Inspiration Power
Dr. M. Visvesvaraya — statesman, administrator and engineer; awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

The man behind our name
VIET is named after one of India's greatest engineers and public servants. Four moments that defined his life — and ours.
Early life & education
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya completed his lower secondary course at Chikballapur. After high school he joined the Central College — standing first in engineering, which made it natural for him to enter the Bombay Government Service. He joined the engineers' cadre as an Assistant Engineer.
A test on the Panjra river
The first real test of his ability came when he was entrusted with the construction of a syphon on the river Panjra at Dashari, a village 35 miles from Dhulia. From there, Visvesvaraya proved his mettle on the world stage — and it was this inspiring force that led, decades later, to the idea of a world-class technical institute being raised in his name.
A national engineer
Dr. Visvesvaraya was an honorary life fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India). His birthday, 15 September, is observed as Engineer's Day across the country — a recognition of how deeply his work shaped Indian public life and engineering practice.
What this means for VIET
Vishveshwarya Institute is more than a hall of residence — it is a working community where students, faculty and researchers carry forward what Sir M. Visvesvaraya stood for. Discipline. Integrity. Public usefulness. Every classroom and laboratory on this campus is meant to live up to that name.
"The dedication and the value of time he embodied are the guiding principles of our institute."
How VIET was born
Founded in 2000, Vishveshwarya Institute of Engineering and Technology was established to carry forward what Sir M. Visvesvaraya stood for — the discipline of engineering, the value of time, and the dignity of public service. Every programme we offer is built around that ethos.
